Good evening everyone, I hope you're all well. I know it's been a fair while since I last did a proper update here on this ol' blog and for that, I apologise.
So, what's been happening in my life as of late? Well, just this morning, Khang and I paid a visit to a computer fair over at the National Motocycle Museum, near the NEC. I came away with 20 meters of crossover cable (was tempted by the 50 meter one!) whilst Khang left with a few DVD+Rs, a graphics card heat sink, and a few other bits and bobs.
I went back into the city to grab some lunch consisting of a lovely salmon and cream cheese sandwich from Mark's & Spencer's food hall. Lovely. And no Khang, I didn't go to Quizno's before you ask again...
Yesterday, I buckled and bought myself a Belkin wireless access point. Doesn't look nearly as nice as an Airport Express, but at £30 cheaper, I'm willing to make that sacrifice. It's not like I'll be selling it anyway, which would be a prime reason to buy Apple products since they do retain their value very nicely. The transmitter was surprisingly very simple to set up, and it was broadcasting an unprotected signal within minutes of plugging it into my router.
After an hour or so of playing about with various settings, I'd finally enabled both MAC address filtering and 128bit WEP encryption; haha, take that you would-be-hackers! And then my mom fried it. She placed some stupid lucky (lucky my ass) water ornament we people from the far East seem to love next to it and somehow, the water managed to get on to the power supply for the access point. Luckily, it didn't affect the router which is still safe and sound. She has since gotten a replacement from PC World and all is well again, in fact I'm using the wireless connection right now to type up this blog entry.
I was sad to leave Aber one week ago; it was different this time since I knew that it would be the very last time I'd potentially see some people I've met over the last three years. So much so, I started to get really choked up last Sunday afternoon whilst I was packing my stuff away; I had to sit down since I physically couldn't stop crying. I don't know what it's going to be like next academic year, I guess to the only resolve is to spend even more time my nearest and dearest.
In other news I've read, it seems Apple are in talks with Intel regarding new processors. I personally can't understand why they'd even consider this; the last time Apple changed processors from Motorola to IBM's PowerPC, they lost a helluva lot of market share and I don't see why this time 'round would be any different. For starters, they'd have to have dual-releases of various pieces of software for both older and newer Macs, not to mention third party developers having to do the same. I'm also guessing the Intel processors would also destroy one of their portables' biggest selling points, their long battery life. Whilst it would bring better brand recognition to Apple, you have to wonder at what expense? Don't do it, Jobs!
